Weekday Sketchers at Pier 97 and Riverside Park

Hudson River Park's Pier 97 will transform into 'otherworldly' green space - Curbed NY

This pier was once a cement factory and off limits to the public. It has recently been reconstructed and is now open to the public, Pier 97 is the most recent addition to the 4 mile long Riverside park..  Set in an area of the Hudson River shoreline Called Clinton Cove, named for DeWitt Clinton, "Father of the Erie Canal", US Senator and Mayor of NYC, the park offers playgrounds, seating area, an "All Ages Slide" and a splash park.
Malcolm Cochran - Private Passage
What is that?

Come and capture the river scenes, the cityscape with the unusual nearby residential buildings and the public art pieces around the park. One of which is Private Passage...a 30' wine bottle riddled with porthole that allow you to see the inside the bottle to view the recreation of a stateroom on the Queen Mary.

And speaking of public art installations, we will also wander into Riverside Park to see this year's installation from the Art Students League's Works in Public: Sophie Kahn and Marco Palli.  The two sculptures are installed at the south end of Riverside Park which starts at 57th Street.

Erin Hill Two Workshops May 19 and May 21 2024

Two Erin Hill Workshops

May 19, 2024-The Big Picture in Little Pieces

New York City
When: May 19, 2024
Where: Meet at Stumptown Coffee Roasters, 30 West 8th Street, New York, NY 10011 for an overview of the class. Then, we walk to Washington Square Park.

Erin Hill is an accomplished artist and teacher who resides in Australia. She teaches workshops throughout Australia, New Zealand, the US and Europe. To learn more about Erin and her work, visit her website at https://erinhillsketching.com

Erin will begin by taking a double page spread of a sketchbook and start with a decorative title at the top of one page. Then she will show you how to sketch everything all over our pages choosing anything or size you like. We may start with our coffee, but move on to people we see, parts of the Washington Square Arch, plaques and signage, anything historical, trees and foliage, and birds and other wildlife. We will include notes on what we see around the page.

More details here.

------------------------------------------
May 21, 2024-People in Action

Westchester
When: May 21, 2024
Where:Community Unitarian Universalist Congregation , 468 Rosedale Ave, White Plains, NY 10605.

Erin will start by teaching students about human proportions through mannequins. By seeing mannequins on a table in a variety of poses, students will learn about proportions in a fun and easy way. We will take time to observe the angles the body takes and sketch it as we see it. We’ll sketch as many as we can over our page and then add color.

In a second exercise, we will observe our sketching friends in action. And finally there will be a third exercise that Erin will explain at the time. This one causes great hilarity. The goal of the exercises will be for students to become comfortable with adding people to their other art works.

Questions, comments and RSVP directly to
margaret.casagrande@gmail.com
DO NOT reply to this email as your inquiry will go to a "dead letter" file.

If it’s not raining, we can be outside in the park sketching this beautiful building and the First Reformed Church and cemetery of Hackensack.

The courthouse rotunda is on the register of National Historic landmarks. There are several courtrooms in the Rotunda with hand painted murals adorning the walls. The Rotunda, with its marble and stained glass, and the courtrooms, were featured in scenes from the movies Hackers, Devil's Advocate and Before and After.

Fun fact: The first Bergen County courthouse was in Quacksack.

The entrance is on Court Street across from the church. To go in the courthouse, we have to go through security just like the airport. So leave your pointy items at home. Bathrooms and water are inside.

Parking:

Street parking and the courthouse visitor parking. Parkmobile app.

55 Court St, Hackensack, NJ 07601

Date: Thursday, April 25

SATURDAY: Sketch the Garden

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden

Some of the Cherry Blossoms are in bloom, other's are poised and nearly ready.

The Brooklyn Botanic Gardens is one of my favorite spots in the city.  Sketching last week proved that having a backup plan is always a good idea.  The backup plan for the Botanic Gardens is, of course, the Brooklyn Museum.  At this point the weather looks promising for our weekend sketch.

Where:   We’ll meet at the entrance at 150 Eastern Parkway, near the subway.  (Note: there is another entrance at 990 Washington Avenue near the parking lot.)

How:

-   By Subway:  Take the #1 or #3 train Eastern Pkwy - Brooklyn Museum

Weekday Sketchers at the Peace Fountain, St. John the Divine

Monday's Monument: St. John the Divine Peace Fountain, New York ...

Questions, comments and RSVP directly to President@nycurbansketchers.org.
DO NOT respond to this email as you inquiry will go to a "dead letter" file.

St. John the Divine in Morningside Heights is America's answer to the great cathedrals of Europe. Standing in all of its Gothic glory and still under construction after more than 100 years, St. John's offers us a trove of sketching possibilities: the cathedral, both inside and out, the magnificent Peace Fountain and the beautiful gardens surrounding the many buildings on its almost 12 acre property.

This week we will be sketching the exterior of the building and specifically the Peace Fountain, located just to the south of the cathedral.   Standing almost 40 feet in the air, the fountain offers endless scenes of angels and devils, animals and humans and  mythological figures that portray the struggle of good over evil.  Try to capture it all or just concentrate on small portions of the fountain.  Even the railings around the fountain have wonderful sculptures to sketch.

Don't like the fountain, no problem, sketch the amazing building or wander through the rose garden, sculpture garden or biblical garden.  Truly there is something here for everyone.
